Signs of a Cockroach Problem

Because cockroaches are masters of hiding and are most active at night, you may not realise you have a problem until an infestation is well-established. However, they leave behind several tell-tale signs. Being able to identify these signs is crucial for early detection and effective control.

Cockroach Droppings:

You may find small, black, pepper-like droppings in cupboards, along shelves, or in drawers where cockroaches have been active. The quantity of droppings is often a good indicator of the level of infestation.

Smear Marks:

In areas with high humidity, such as bathrooms or laundry rooms, cockroaches leave behind brown, irregular-shaped smear marks on horizontal surfaces and at wall-floor junctions. These marks are a result of them crawling over surfaces.

Shed Skins:

As they grow from nymphs to adults, cockroaches shed their skin 5-8 times. These light brown, shed skins are often found close to where they are sheltering, providing a clear sign of a breeding population.

Unusual Odour:

A well-established cockroach infestation produces a lingering and unpleasant musty smell. This odour, caused by secretions from their bodies, can taint items they come into contact with and will become more noticeable as the infestation grows.

Egg Capsules (Oothecae):

Cockroaches lay their eggs in a protective casing called an ootheca. Finding these small, dark brown, oval-shaped capsules in hidden spaces like behind furniture, in cracks and crevices, or under appliances is a definite sign of an infestation.

Live Cockroaches:

Sighting live cockroaches is the most obvious sign. Because they are nocturnal, seeing them during the day often indicates a heavy infestation that has pushed them out of their hiding places in search of food. Check warm, dark, and sheltered areas.

Damage:

Cockroaches are omnivorous and will eat almost anything. Look for signs of damage on organic goods, including leather, books, packaging, and food items.

How to Prevent a Cockroach Infestation

Proactive prevention is the most effective strategy to keep your home or business cockroach-free. By making your property inhospitable to these pests, you can significantly reduce the risk of an infestation taking hold. The key is to systematically eliminate their access to three essential things: food, water, and shelter.

1. Eliminate Food Sources

Cockroaches are opportunistic scavengers. Denying them a meal is your first and most critical line of defence.

  • Kitchen Hygiene: Clean up crumbs and food spills immediately. This includes wiping down countertops, tables, and sweeping floors daily, especially in food preparation and dining areas. Don't leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight.
  • Secure Food Storage: Store all food, including pet food, in airtight containers made of glass, metal, or hard plastic. Cockroaches can easily chew through cardboard boxes and plastic bags.
  • Effective Waste Management: Dispose of rubbish regularly in a bin with a tight-fitting lid. Empty indoor bins every night, and ensure outdoor bins are sealed and placed away from the building's entrances. For businesses, this includes managing dumpster areas to prevent overflow and spillage.
  • Deep Clean Regularly: Grease and food debris build up in hidden areas. Make a habit of cleaning under and behind appliances like refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, and toasters.

2. Remove Water and Moisture

Cockroaches need a regular supply of water to survive and are instinctively drawn to damp, humid environments.

  • Fix Leaks Promptly: Repair any leaking taps, dripping pipes under sinks, or faulty appliances like dishwashers and refrigerators immediately. Even a small amount of condensation or a slow drip can sustain a cockroach population.
  • Reduce Humidity: Ensure good ventilation in bathrooms, kitchens, and basements to reduce moisture buildup. Use extractor fans when cooking or showering.
  • Eliminate Standing Water: Do not leave water standing in sinks or buckets. Wipe down sinks, showers, and bathtubs before bed and check the drip trays under refrigerators and indoor pot plants.

3. Deny Them Shelter and Entry

Cockroaches can flatten their bodies to squeeze through the tiniest of gaps. A thorough inspection and sealing process is vital to block their entry.

  • Seal All Entry Points: Use sealant or caulk to fill cracks and crevices in walls, skirting boards, around pipes, and behind electrical sockets. Pay close attention to gaps between tiles and walls in the kitchen and bathroom.
  • Declutter Your Space: Reduce clutter in your home, storerooms, or stock areas. Cardboard boxes, stacks of newspapers, and piles of clothing provide ideal, undisturbed hiding and breeding spots for cockroaches.
  • Inspect Incoming Items: Carefully check groceries, delivery boxes, second-hand furniture, and even appliances before bringing them inside your property. Cockroaches or their egg cases can easily be transported into a clean environment.
  • Maintain Your Yard: For properties with gardens, keep the area tidy. Trim vegetation and shrubbery away from the building's foundation and remove piles of wood or garden debris where cockroaches can shelter before finding their way inside.
