Frequently Asked Questions about Pest Control in Cape Town
What are the most common pests in Cape Town?
Cape Town’s Mediterranean climate dictates our most common pests. During the wet winter months, roof rodents (rats and mice), are the primary issue as they seek shelter indoors. In the hot, dry summers, we see a surge in cockroaches (both German and American), Ants foraging for water, and flies. The coastal humidity also creates ideal conditions for termites, particularly in older suburbs and coastal properties.
Why am I suddenly seeing large Bush cockroaches in my Cape Town home?
Bush cockroaches thrive in the Western Cape's natural environment and fynbos. Unlike other species, they don't typically infest or breed inside buildings. Instead, they are "accidental invaders" that come indoors looking for refuge during heavy rains or sudden temperature spikes. Our qualified technicians can apply professional exterior barrier treatments to seal off entry points and prevent Bush cockroaches from crossing your threshold.
How do Cape Town's winter rains affect pest activity?
Heavy winter rainfall in the Western Cape flushes pests out of their natural habitats. Rodents are notorious for invading roof voids and wall cavities in homes across the Southern and Northern Suburbs to escape the cold and wet. We highly recommend proactive rodent proofing before the winter rains begin.
Do you provide termite treatment in Cape Town?
Yes, our local experts specialise in termite control across the Western Cape. The coastal climate makes properties in areas like Somerset West, Durbanville, and the Atlantic Seaboard particularly vulnerable to subterranean termites. We offer comprehensive inspections, post-construction chemical barriers, and pre-construction treatments to protect your property from structural damage.
How quickly can Rentokil respond to a pest problem in Cape Town?
Operating from our Claremont branch, our local technicians are strategically positioned to provide rapid, localised responses. Whether you are in the City Bowl, the Deep South, or the Northern Suburbs, we can typically schedule same-day or next-day visits to minimise disruption to your home or business.
Why are cockroaches such a persistent problem in Cape Town?
Cockroaches thrive in Cape Town's high-density urban areas, the CBD, and the bustling hospitality industry. German cockroaches breed rapidly in warm, indoor environments like kitchens and restaurants, while larger American cockroaches often emerge from drains and sewers during the hotter months. Professional control is required to target their breeding sites and break the life cycle, as DIY sprays only kill the visible insects.

Pest Control Services
“Too often we do not give credit where credit is due, believing that a person is simply doing their job and you are paying for the service provided. However, having Vuyo Mqomboti doing our pest control feels like we have made a friend and are dealing with someone who honestly cares. Vuyo had given us “instructions” regarding our problem areas (holes in walls/doors etc) which we have followed through with and to our great satisfaction we seem to have our rat problem under control, and as for the cockroaches well those critters are no longer running under our desks and sending us screaming!
Vuyo deserves (in our eyes) to be recognised for his professionalism, friendliness and knowledge of the job he does, I am sure that it is not always the most pleasant of jobs but he is always happy, cheerful and a pleasure to have around."
