Protecting businesses and homes in South Africa from Pests for 50 Years

Other Wildlife

In South Africa we are lucky to have a varied environment, rich in wildlife. There are however times when elements of our wildlife can come into conflict with people and property. When this does occur the problems that wildlife can pose vary from damage to the fabric and structure of buildings to harming crops and plants. On rare occasions they can pose a health risk.

Rentokil South Africa does not offer wildlife management services. We do however offer advice on how to prevent wildlife. For any wildlife services, please contact your local SPCA for assistance.

Rentokil can offer some useful tips on wildlife management to help you try and deter and exclude animals such as feral cats, rabbits, foxes and squirrels, which can potentially cause damage to your property and grounds.

Whilst we maintain the highest levels of pest risk management for our customers, we always remain acutely aware of the many non-target species among our urban and rural wildlife. As unique elements of our natural world these creatures often require conservation, and many species are protected to varying degrees by legislation.

If you do however experience problems with nuisance wildlife on your premises, please follow our prevention advice.

Wildlife prevention

There are plenty of old wives tales about different treatments you can use to keep unwelcome visitors out of your garden and home.

How to prevent wildlife

  • Keep dustbins sealed and secured so animals cannot access its content.
  • Keep your lawn clear of natural debris, as this may provide bedding for wildlife tempted to nest in nearby overgrown areas in your garden. The collection of bedding will leave an obvious trail as they drag it into their cover.
  • A fence will deter some wildlife from entering your garden.
  • Keep lawns in good condition. If the grass is regularly mowed and raked, well-drained and aerated then that will reduce the chances of insects laying eggs which will, in turn, attract foraging wildlife. It’s also worth removing moss and overhanging vegetation which can lead to damp areas that make perfect breeding conditions for insect larvae.
  • To prevent other wildlife getting into your home, plug all gaps around the perimeter of your property. You need to be thorough, as pests like slugs have no bones and can squeeze through the tiniest of holes.

If you have implemented the above prevention tips and further require wildlife assistance, your local SPCA will be able to help.
