Dealing with spiders is part and parcel of being a pest control technician so being arachnophobic would be an unfortunate disposition. We’re also dealing with bugs, rodents and snakes, climbing up tall ladders and climbing through dark, cramped spaces.
This got me wondering about how many phobia’s this job can trigger and is there a more phobic job out there? When I started researching phobias to write this blog post I noticed one of my colleagues had already covered the common pest phobias – so I have listed some of the phobias you CANNOT have working for Rentokil.
Untold Phobias you cannot have working in our line of business
Automysophobia– Fear of being dirty – pest control isn’t always a clean job!
Ailurophobia– Fear of cats – not to be funny but if you’ve seen the vicious feral cats that feed on some of the rodents – you’ll understand!
Acrophobia – Fear of heights – installing bird units is always on the tallest dam building – “Dear Rentokil can you get rid of my bird problem on the Gazillionth floor…”
Amaxophobia– Fear of riding in a car – unfortunate as we service by car/van
Ambulophobia– Fear of walking – goes without saying, who fears walking, come on?
Anthropophobia– Fear of people or society – definitely cannot be on your list of fears as we are a service company and good communication and customer interaction is essential!
Batrachophobia– Fear of amphibians, such as frogs, newts, salamanders, etc– but you may be required to deal with one or two on the odd occasion.
Cryophobia – Fear of extreme cold, ice or frost – you know that feeling waking up early to get to work on time or servicing in cold conditions may be required.
Eosophobia– Fear of dawn or daylight – gosh this is a tough one not to fear – when that sun creeps up and you’re nice and cosy in bed and you know you have to get up and get ready for work, admit it, you know what I’m talking about…
Ergophobia – Fear of work – No one at Rentokil suffers with this, because if you had a phobia about work you wouldn’t be at work?
Gelotophobia – Fear of being laughed at – this is usually that fear you get when someone asks “so what do you do for a living” and you have to tell them “I kill bugs…”
Herpetophobia – Surprisingly, not a fear of receiving a STD but fear of reptiles or creepy, crawly things. Leaving little plastic spiders and toy snakes around these people is SUCH a laugh.
Hodophobia – Fear of road travel – definitely a no no!
Iophobia – Fear of poison – what are you going to kill roaches with, love?
Mechanophobia – Fear of machines – last time I checked, the fogging machine didn’t eat anyone?
Oenophobia – Fear of wines – only on conferences…
Plutophobia – Fear of wealth – HAHAHAHA – I don’t need to fear that happening to me anytime soon but I think I could overcome it!
I wonder if there’s a phobia for pest control?
