How to get rid of flies in the summer months

Keep flies away from your foodAs the warm weather approaches, we can expect flying insects to take to the wing, and if you’re  planning an outdoors event or organising a get-together in your office, kitchen or at home, they can be a major source of annoyance. Most flying insects are a nuisance and some, like flies, can pose a real threat to your friends, family and colleagues, as they carry harmful diseases such as dysentery, gastroentitis and E.Coli. For many businesses, a fly infestation is more than an annoyance, it’s cause for real concern.

Learn how fly control from Rentokil can benefit not only your state of mind, but also your health, and be green at the same time!

Some super tips on how to keep out the buzzing pests and keep in the fresh summer air:

1. Opt for insecticides derived from natural origins

Fly sprays are substances that are absorbed by the central nervous system of the fly; paralysing them and, ultimately, resulting in their death. Besides the fact that these Pyrethroids (artificial insecticides) are toxic to flying insects such as bees and dragonflies, these chemicals are lethal to flies and invertebrates that constitute the base of many aquatic and land-dwelling food webs (Zaveri Mihir, The Daily Californian).

Should you prefer the user-friendliness of a fly spray, opt for Pyrethrins (natural insecticides). While this chemical is slightly poisonous, it also is an insect repellent at lower concentrations. Originating from Chrysanthemum flowers, Pyrethrins are biodegradable and break down on exposure to light or oxygen. Using a natural insecticide ensures that there will be no excessive build-up of insecticide in the area being treated.

2. Rely on Mother Nature and make use of herbs

Not only can you surround yourself with lovely scents, but also deter pesky flies and other flying insects while you’re at it! Herbs have been used for thousands of years as household cleaners, disinfectants, and insect repellents. Herbs also help improve the environment. Did you know that herbs continue to work for you when you have discarded them to the compost heap? They enrich the soil, add nutrients, and some even attract earthworms that help break down organic matter.  Make use of these seven herbs that work magic to repel flies: Basil (and Lemon Basil), Rosemary, Lavender, Bay Leaf, Mint, Tansy and Sweet Woodruff.

3. Fly towards the light!

Tired of fly swatting and DIY remedies? Get rid of flies quickly and efficiently with fly killing units. Rentokil makes use of electric fly control units to control fly infestations. These electric fly control units use ultraviolet lights and unique encapsulation technology to capture flies and other flying insects, and are worthwhile investment for some restaurants or food plants that need to abide to HACCP compliance.

Rentokil’s Luminos units are carefully positioned by professional pest control technicians to ensure the maximum effectiveness. The encapsulation technology ensures flies are captured and killed efficiently, without the worry of fragments escaping to contaminate your premises. What is more, Luminos fly control units use minimal energy, and ensure that the dangers of diseases carried by flies are limited.

Goodbye flies!

Here is to a fly-free summer!

      Hi Jennie

It sounds like your pesky flies are a species of biting fly and that they are more than likely coming from outside. They normally breed in stagnant water and I’d suggest you take a look outdoors to pinpoint the areas where stagnant water sources are present. It would be best to get rid of the stagnant water. A second option would be to have the water treated with larvaecides, although an important consideration in this regard is whether children and/or or pets can gain access to these water sources, as it could be dangerous to them.

If we can gain some insight into which areas the flies are breeding, we can assist you to identify the type of fly species and what other actions can be taken to get rid of these flies. In the meanwhile, check out our flies page and see if you can identify the fly species in question and learn more about flies. Also, be sure to immediately clear away pet faeces to deter flies and pay your local vet a visit, whom will prescribe a solution for your pets.

Look forward to hearing about your findings.
