It is almost time for our pop-up Pestaurant to whip up a storm in Cape Town. We will be serving up a selection of edible insects that you might usually consider as pests, rather than a lunch time feast. See what’s on the menu.
Some important facts: Insects are a sustainable form of protein
Recently an insect cookbook, “Food for a Sustainable Planet” won the 2014 prize at the Green Book Festival. The book discusses the benefits of insects in one’s diet. Insects are everywhere and they reproduce quickly. They have high growth and feed conversion rates and a low environmental footprint.
Due to the high demand for meat, and the growing population worldwide, insects are becoming a more sustainable source of protein. Did you know that 100g of grasshopper can carry 20.6g of protein, 35.3mg of calcium and 5mg of iron? I think it’s time to try alternative sources of protein, don’t you?
