Pest Guides - Noises in the Attic

Scurrying and scraping noises from the attic not only cause distress and anxiety but are also a strong indication that rodents or other wildlife have taken up residence in your roof space. In particular, attics are the perfect environment for squirrels and rodents. Rodents can do significant damage to items stored in your attic while their constant gnawing can damage the fabric of your home and can even be a fire hazard if electric cabling is gnawed.

The cause of the noise should be investigated as soon as possible because the nests and droppings of these pests become ideal breeding sites for insects which then carry disease into your home.

The first step is to inspect your attic and look for visible signs of habitation by rodents or other wildlife. The most common sign of habitation is their droppings.

Identifying Pests Droppings

  • Mouse Droppings: Thin and spindle shaped with a pointed end about 5mm long
  • Brown Rat Droppings: Blunt spindle shaped averaging 1½ to 2cm
  • Black Rat Droppings: Pointed sausage shape average length 1½ cm
  • Squirrel Droppings: Similar to the Brown Rat dropping but slightly rounder and 1½ to 2cms in length
  • Bat Droppings: Dark brown or black and 4-8mm long. Bat droppings are similar to mouse droppings but crumble into a fine powder when crushed.

How to get rid of Squirrels in the attic

If squirrels get into your roof, they can cause significant damage by chewing and gnawing wood and electrical cables.

Squirrel

Squirrels can be removed from your property by catching them in squirrel traps. It is possible for the amateur to do this, although take great care when handling cages with live squirrels as they are likely to bite and scratch. However, professional pest control is generally recommended to deal with squirrels in the home.

Professional treatment of squirrels may also involve the use of mechanical traps or baiting with rodenticides. These are very effective methods but must be applied by appropriately trained technicians. As well as removing squirrels, it is essential to proof your home against squirrels to stop them from re-entering. This may include cutting branches of trees that overhang your property that squirrels use to access the attic.

How to get rid of Birds in the attic

Pigeons or other birds in the roof are a problem because of the mess and health risks their droppings cause, as well as the noise of cooing and flapping wings.

Pigeon

Make use of bird proofing methods to deter birds from entering. Entry points into your loft should be proofed using spikes, wire systems or bird netting.

It may be possible to get rid of pigeons and birds on your property, but bird removal is likely to require professional bird control methods such as trapping or baiting.

What to do about Bats in the attic

Whilst Bats are a nuisance in your roof - and their droppings can attract insects - it is an offence under South African law to poison bats and transgressions can be punished by up to six months imprisonment or a R40,000 fine.

Bat

If you are aware that bats are roosting in your attic, you should consult with the Bat Conservation Group (BCG) before carrying out remedial timber treatments, insect control or rodent control that may cause harm to bats. The BCG is dedicated to the conservation of the approximately 65 species of insectivorous bats and the seven fruit-eating bats found in southern Africa. Contact the Bat Conservation Group on (011) 486 1102 or email them at bats@ewt.org.za

While bats do not cause damage themselves, their corrosive droppings can damage wood and encourage insects.

Bats can be removed by a professional pest control technician and the entry points into the loft can be proofed to stop them from re-entering. We would only advocate this work being done at the end of the Bat breeding season so that we can ensure that no bats are left inside the roof when we seal it up.

Deep cleaning and the use of amateur insecticides will help to keep insects under control but you may require professional pest control treatment to eradicate the infestation.
