This Facebook and Twitter survey was conducted alongside the global Pestaurant event that took place on the 4th June 2014, and in South Africa on the 31st May at the Good Food and Wine Show in Cape Town. This event created awareness about pest control, and attracted many a visitor, ready to literally eat their fears – eating insects such as roasted locusts, meal worms, buffalo worms and crickets.

Nathalie Leblond, Marketing Communications Manager, says: “When pests invade your home or business, you need a fast, reliable service to eliminate risk of damage to your property and the health of those within it. Finding cockroaches in your home or business can be very distressing. As known carriers of diseases such as Salmonella, Dysentery & Gastro-enteritis, exposure to this pest also poses significant health risks. If you have noticed an unpleasant, lingering odour under sinks, behind appliances or in store cupboards, it’s time to check for signs of cockroaches.”

“Rentokil’s technicians have the tools to control pests around the world, so whilst cockroaches may be the world’s most feared pest, you can leave it to the experts to implement professional and effective cockroach control treatments.”

Need to get rid of cockroaches that pester your home? Below are some tips on how to prevent pesky Cockroaches:

cockroach control, get rid of cockroaches

Get rid of cockroaches

1. Eliminate food sources
The most effective way to implement cockroach control is to remove any food, water and shelter, as this attracts them. To get rid of cockroaches, get rid of what sustains them.

  • Do not leave liquids in sinks or buckets
  • Do not leave food sitting out on counters
  • Store dry foods in tightly sealed containers
  • Rinse cans, bottles and plastics before putting them in recycling bins
  • Be sure to empty the rubbish on a daily basis

2. Clean
Exercise cockroach control and clear all waste food and liquid spillage, cleaning up food debris from food preparation areas, under sinks and appliances. Remove pet food, drink and litter trays before nightfall, as cockroaches are nocturnal, and emerge from their daytime harbourages in search of food.

3. De-clutter
Cockroaches release an aggregation pheromone in their droppings telling others they have found a safe harborage. Remove old stacks of newspapers and magazines, unused cardboard boxes and all other forms of clutter from the floor or bottom of cupboards where these pests have easy access.

4. Take preventive measures to get rid of cockroaches before they enter your home in the first place
• Varnish or paint wood shelves to seal them, and wipe them clean regularly
• Check key risk areas where cockroaches may gain entry into the home – cracks, crevices, vents, sewers and pipe drains
• Seal areas such as cracks in walls, around skirting boards, behind electrical sockets, under kitchen sinks and bathroom cabinets to reduce potential hiding areas.

5. Take prompt action to control cockroaches
Without specialist know-how and equipment, cockroach control can sometimes be a losing battle. Should you have an existing cockroach problem not responding to a DIY approach, contact a pest control professional. More tips on how to get rid of cockroaches.
